Clifton Anderson was born in Harlem, New York City into a musical family and from an early age showed an affinity for music, receiving his first trombone from his uncle Jazz legend Sonny Rollins. He went on to study at the prestigious Fiorello LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and is a graduate of The Manhattan School of Music. Clifton is considered one of the leading trombonists and composers performing in Jazz today. His performances embody the fertile and varied history of musical experiences he’s enjoyed, working with a who’s who of musical giants; from Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner, Dizzy Gillespie, Slide Hampton, Lester Bowie and Dee Dee Bridgewater to Stevie Wonder, Keith Richards, Paul Simon and The Mighty Sparrow among many others. He is not only noted for his rich personal sound on the trombone but for his abilities as a composer and musical interpreter.
Clifton worked with Sonny Rollins for over twenty five years, participating in multiple world tours, appearing on ten of his recordings and producing three CD’s and one DVD for Sonny’s Doxy Records label. In 2009 Clifton established himself as a leader and has produced four critically acclaimed recordings under his name. His latest single release “Some Things Never Change” is available as a download from Clifton’s new label, What We Do Music. It features an all-star cast including; Kenny Garrett, Ray Parker Jr., Steve Jordan, Russel Blake, John F. Adams and Victor See Yuen. Clifton and his current stellar sextet continue to perform before very enthusiastic and appreciative audiences throughout the USA and Europe, bringing a mix of swinging, high energy, melodic and groove based originals and standards to their listeners.
