Renowned Saxophonist and a native of St. Louis Missouri, Eric Person continues to make a strong impression on the jazz scene. His latest CD Blue Vision features his collaboration with tenor saxophone titan Houston Person. His work as a leader is stylistically diverse and intrepid. Critics have taken note of Eric’s signature sound on alto and soprano saxophone. John Chacona of Signal to Noise writes “he cultivates a sheer beauty of sound that’s often breathtaking. Listen to the round, full yet emotional sound he gets on soprano. On alto, his sound is big and singing with a hint of bluesy smoke. This is an artist that demands and rewards your attention.” These days, you can hear Person adding flute to the mix.
Eric has worked with leaders within the vanguard of the jazz world namely McCoy Tyner, Dave Holland, and Chico Hamilton. He has also performed with cutting-edge artists Vernon Reid and World Saxophone Quartet. Additionally, Person has performed, collaborated, and recorded with a who’s who of contemporary musicians of distinction including Sam Rivers, Wallace Roney, Dave Douglas, Ben Harper, David Murray, Will Calhoun, Bootsy Collins, and many others.
Person stepped into the leadership spotlight with his recording debut Arrival (1993) which emphasized a variety of styles, fresh compositional approaches, and a willingness to take chances. Josef Woodard of Down Beat Magazine wrote “Person, swerving to the left, finding a fresh path between mainstream jazz and chancier, more personalized terrain.”Person released a succession of highly acclaimed CDs that put his saxophone in different contexts, revealing his refined conceptual vision, depth, and ingenuity. Extra Pressure, Rhythm Edge, The Grand Illusion, Thoughts on God, Duoscope, and Blue Vision reveal the hallmarks of Eric’s personal saxophone sound, dexterity, and compositional prowess.
With more than 60 recordings as a leader and with others, Eric Person continues to forge an ever-widening path as a versatile and dynamic artist.
