New Haven will become the stage for alternative latin band New Caracas as they perform the material from their upcoming album, NOS. The iconic venue will be hosting the collective of musicians as they come together to perform a brand new collection of songs inspired by the Latin American diaspora, while blending rhythms from Venezuela, Argentina, Peru, and Brazil with jazz, rock, and pop idioms.
Led by Venezuelan composer, Luis D’Elias, the New York based group will be joined by Colombian singer-songwriter Alea and special guest Matt Knoegel, who will also be performing a set with his own trio. Together they will perform a set that will revisit the band’s earlier Venezuelan jazz roots as well as showcase the evolution of their music which incorporates musical storytelling and lyricism to its already cinematic quality. The night promises to combine traditional South American rhythms, folklore, dance, and poems that seek to capture the spirit of immigration, along with its highs, its lows, and all of its possibilities.
Inspired by the rhythms that flow across Latin America, New Caracas was founded in 2012 by Luis D’Elias, PJ Duffy, Brendan Pajak, and Evan Waaramaa in 2012 and defines itself as a collective of musicians, that craft a vast soundscape of melodies and sounds drawn from the South American experience, its folklore, and its traditions. For their debut album under their former name Luis D’Elias Ensemble, the band was nominated to the Independent Music Awards, the Hollywood Music in Media Awards, and the Premios Pepsi Music in Venezuela. They have also brought their joropo-inspired fusion to the stages of iconic venues in Boston and New York, like the Regattabar, the Museum of Fine Arts, (le) Poisson Rouge, The Bitter End, and Rockwood Music Hall. Their newest production, NOS, is a collection of musical stories inspired in the Latin American Diaspora, and was funded completely in 2017 via the crowdfunding platform, IndieGogo. With the first single of the new album being hailed by Billboard as “(one of the) three must-hear releases from Venezuelan artists”, New Caracas imbues their music with the unique vibrance and energy of a multicultural cast of artists under one vision: to expand latin music to new frontiers and create a community based around the sounds and colors of América Latina.
