Southern California jazz pianist Danny Green has earned recognition as a bandleader and as a composer with a gift for spinning supple, absorbing narratives. Green’s growing portfolio of vibrant sounds – a mix of jazz, classical, and Brazilian rhythms – has captured the attention of critics around the world, including DownBeat, Jazziz, Public Radio International, and The Boston Globe. His trio includes bassist Justin Grinnell and drummer Julien Cantelm, noteworthy musicians in their own right, and together they have developed a nearly psychic connection. They have honed their craft as featured artists at the San Jose Jazz Festival, TEDxSanDiego, Baltimore’s An Die Musik Live!, and other prominent venues across the country and internationally.
Winner of the 2018 award for Best Jazz Artist at the San Diego Music Awards, Green celebrates his new release One Day It Will, which All About Jazz describes as “brimming with unabashed grace, elegance and forthright beauty.” Green takes listeners on a journey that is equal parts introspective and exuberant, and always compelling.
The Danny Green Trio offers a master class prior to the performance. In a lecture intended for both musicians and non-musicians, Green shares his experience as a composer, covering a wide range of topics: channeling inspiration, balancing musical intuition with musical theory, shaping compositions through arrangement, and notating for different instrumentations.
Grinnell and Cantelm join Green to demonstrate how musicians bring a musical score to life. Each musician will share his individual approach to interpreting music from a score and perform live examples.
“The tunes themselves are like short stories, with each and every tale branching off, sometimes sincere and in ernest, sometimes playful and adventurous, yet always with a consummate skill and passion.” – UK Vibe
