SUMMARY:Paradox Organ Alliance
DESCRIPTION:\nThe Paradox Organ Alliance plays a jazz show at Best Video Film & Cultural Center on Sat.\, May 30. The show starts 7 PM and the cover is $10. \nThe Paradox Organ Alliance is dedicated to preserving and continuing the great 70-plus-year tradition of Hammond organ\, guitar and drum set trios. From blues to bebop\, latin\, funky boogaloo to the Great American Songbook\, each Alliance set explores a musical journey through time. Whenever possible\, guest soloists are featured.\nThe founding members\, Dr. Gary Grippo\, Dr. Gary Novick and John McGuire\, have performed together for several years. Dr. Grippo has been a well-known member of the Connecticut and New Haven jazz scene for over 20 years. A music major at Rutgers\, he has studied with Bucky Pizzarelli and Harry Leahey\, among others. While at Rutgers\, he performed with jazz legends Gerry Mulligan\, Louie Bellson\, and Clark Terry. He currently host a weekly jazz radio show on WNHU. \nDr. Novick\, a newcomer to the Connecticut jazz scene\, has studied with Noah Baerman and Ben Patterson. A life-long keyboardist\, he is now dedicating himself to digging deeply into the Hammond idiom\, channeling the techniques of the masters of the B-3.\nJohn McGuire has been performing in various musical idioms for over 40 years. He has studied privately with Ed Soph\, Gary Chaffee and the great Joe Morello and has performed with such Jazz stalwarts as Lew Soloff\, Joe Roccisano\, Archie Shepp and Shelton Lester. \n\n

A Grammy Award winner as part of Chick Corea’s Spanish Heart Band\, he has performed and recorded alongside Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra\, Gonzalo Rubalcaba\, Joe Lovano\, Quincy Jones\, Wynton Marsalis\, Herbie Hancock\, Maria Schneider\, Kenny Barron\, Carla Bley\, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. He is currently a member of the internationally acclaimed SFJazz Collective and serves on the faculty at NYU and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. \nRodriguez’s playing is rooted in the hard bop tradition but reaches comfortably across the full spectrum of jazz — from straight-ahead to Latin\, from chamber settings to large ensembles. His recordings as a leader\, Reverence (Criss Cross) and Pathways (2021)\, showcase a mature voice that is at once lyrical\, searching\, and deeply swinging. Alongside his brother\, pianist Robert Rodriguez\, he has recorded five albums as the Rodriguez Brothers — a long-running creative partnership that has earned Grammy nominations and international acclaim. \nAt The Side Door\, Rodriguez brings his own quintet — an intimate format that puts his voice front and center in a room built for exactly this kind of music. \nThe Side Door Jazz Club is a dedicated jazz listening room located inside the historic Old Lyme Inn\, 85 Lyme Street\, Old Lyme\, CT.
