SUMMARY:Jazz And The Spoken Word
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nJAZZ HAVEN PRESENTS:  JAZZ AND THE SPOKEN WORD\nSaturday\, September 26th     2:00 – 4:00pm     at the New Haven Museum.     FREE!\n\n\n\nNew Haven Museum\, 114 Whitney Ave\, New Haven\, CT 06510\, USA\n\n\n–“Jazz and the Spoken Word\,” a rich tradition where the syncopated rhythms of jazz merge with the cadence of spoken poetry\, will bring area artists together in an exciting new collaboration between Jazz Haven and The New Haven Museum on September 26\, 2026 at 2 p.m. Free. \nThe art of spoken word has become an important component of Jazz Haven’s mission to explore the full breadth of the culture of jazz\, says organizer and drummer Jesse Hameen II. “This format brings together poets\, musicians\, photographers\, painters and other artists whose works are influenced by the jazz experience in America.” \nThe master musicians performing that evening include Ben Bilello on drums\, Zwelakhe-Duma Bell le Pere on bass\, Will Cleary on saxophone and Darren Litzie on piano. Spoken-word artists Kate Rushin\, Shaunda Holloway\, Craig O’Connell and Stanley Welch will perform original works and recitations of famous jazz poetry to the swinging grooves. The event will also include an invitation to the greater spoken-word community to participate. \nHameen says the art of spoken word has long been associated with jazz. He notes that one of the earliest and most famous examples of the spoken word and jazz is “The Weary Blues\,” a 1925 composition by Langston Hughes recited by the poet over jazz arrangements by Charles Mingus in 1958. \nOther famous spoken-word jazz collaborations include those by Gil Scott Heron\, often called the “Godfather of Modern Rap\,” Jon Hendricks\, the “Poet Laureate of Jazz\,” stand-up comedian Lord Buckley\, poet Amiri Baraka and more. \n“Spoken word is not a passive experience\, but rather an active engagement between the speaker/poet and jazz musicians\,” Hameen says. “It may include poetry\, talking voices\, scat\, African chanting\, vocalese or other renderings that can be incorporated with jazz rhythms and improvisation.” \n  \n

SUMMARY:Bill Charlap Trio
DESCRIPTION: \nBill Charlap Trio\nThe Side Door Old Lyme\, CT\n\n\n\nSaturday\, September 26  •  8 PM – 10 PM\n\n\n\n\n\nA Grammy Award winning pianist and one of the true masters of the American songbook brings his trio to The Side Door for four unforgettable \n\n\n\n\n\nBill Charlap – Piano\nDavid Wong – Bass\nDennis Mackrel – Drums \nBill Charlap was born in New York City into a deeply musical family\, his father was Broadway composer Moose Charlap\, whose credits include Peter Pan\, and his mother is singer Sandy Stewart\, a Grammy nominated vocalist who toured with Benny Goodman. Charlap began playing piano at age three and never looked back. In the late 1980s he joined Gerry Mulligan’s quintet\, and in 1995 secured one of the most coveted piano chairs in jazz with the Phil Woods Quintet. Since then he has performed with an extraordinary range of the music’s leading artists\, including Tony Bennett\, Wynton Marsalis\, Ron Carter\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Houston Person\, and Barbra Streisand. \nCharlap is widely regarded as one of the most gifted interpreters of the American songbook working today. Time magazine has written that he “approaches a song the way a lover approaches his beloved\, no matter how imaginative or surprising his take on a song is\, he invariably zeroes in on its essence.” His acclaimed trio\, celebrated for its telepathic interplay and deep swing\, has been together for decades and has released nearly 20 albums together. In 2016\, his collaboration with Tony Bennett\, The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern\, won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. From 2004 through 2023 he served as Artistic Director of New York City’s Jazz in July Festival at 92NY\, and he currently serves as Director of Jazz Studies at William Paterson University. \nJoining him for this special four night engagement are bassist David Wong and drummer Dennis Mackrel\, two of the most respected rhythm section players in jazz. This is a rare and extraordinary opportunity to experience one of the true masters of jazz piano in an intimate setting. \nThe Side Door Jazz Club is a dedicated jazz listening room located inside the historic Old Lyme Inn\, 85 Lyme Street\, Old Lyme\, CT. Tickets are reserved seating. Guests dining at the Old Lyme Inn prior to the show receive 10% off their dinner bill. \n\n\n\n\n  \n
