DESCRIPTION: \nAri Hoenig Trio\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Side Door Old Lyme\, CT\n\n\n\nFriday\, October 2  •  8 PM – 10 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOne of jazz’s most inventive and rhythmically daring drummers brings his trio to The Side Door \n\n\n\n\nAri Hoenig is a jazz drummer\, composer\, and educator known for his unusual and intense approach to drumming\, emphasizing complex rhythms in direct harmony with other group members. Born in Philadelphia to a conductor and classical singer father and a violinist and pianist mother\, Hoenig began studying violin and piano at age four before turning to drums at twelve\, honing his skills at Philadelphia jazz clubs like Ortlieb’s Jazzhaus by age fourteen. He attended the University of North Texas\, where he studied with Ed Soph and played in the celebrated One O’Clock Lab Band\, before transferring to William Paterson College to be closer to New York City. \nRather than playing the traditional role of timekeeper\, Hoenig elevates drumming to a central and visible part of the performance\, drawing comparisons to the approaches of Elvin Jones\, Tony Williams\, and Jack DeJohnette before him. He has performed and recorded with the Jean Michel Pilc Trio\, the Kenny Werner Trio\, Chris Potter Underground\, the Kurt Rosenwinkel Group\, and the Joshua Redman Elastic Band\, among many others. He formed the Ari Hoenig Quartet in 2002 and has released fourteen albums as a leader\, with his quartet winning the prestigious BMW Welt Award in Munich in 2013 for best band led by a drummer. He currently performs regularly at the legendary Smalls Jazz Club in New York City and is on faculty at NYU Steinhardt and The New School. \nThis is a rare opportunity to experience one of jazz’s most singular percussive voices in an intimate setting. \nThe Side Door Jazz Club is a dedicated jazz listening room located inside the historic Old Lyme Inn\, 85 Lyme Street\, Old Lyme\, CT. A graduate of Columbia College Chicago with an MFA from Florida State University\, he is also an alumnus of Houston’s famed performing arts high school HSPVA. Baker has gone on to become a mainstay on the international jazz scene\, performing regularly with notable bandleaders such as Jeremy Pelt\, Johnathan Blake\, Ulysses Owens Jr.\, and Tim Warfield\, among many others. \nHe is also an accomplished composer and bandleader in his own right with the Jalen Baker Quartet. With the release of his debut album This Is Me\, This Is Us in 2021 and his second album Be Still in 2023\, he earned worldwide recognition from publications including DownBeat\, UK Jazz Journal\, Textura\, JazzIZ\, and Stereogum. Baker is also recognized as a Rising Star in DownBeat Magazine’s Critics Poll and was included in Houston City Book’s Leaders and Legends series. DESCRIPTION: \nJeremy Pelt Quintet\nThe Side Door Old Lyme\, CT\nSaturday\, October 10  •  8 PM – 10 PM\n\n\n\nOne of the preeminent trumpeters of his generation brings his quintet to The Side Door for a night of hard-swinging\, modern jazz. \n\n\n\n\n\nJeremy Pelt – Trumpet\nMykhailo Mendelenko – Guitar\nLasse Corson – Piano\nLeighton Harrell – Bass\nJared Spears – Drums \nJeremy Pelt was born in California in 1976 and began playing trumpet at age five\, studying classical music and piano before a high school jazz band sparked a lifelong devotion to the music. He went on to study jazz improvisation and film scoring at Berklee College of Music\, and forged an early bond with the Mingus Big Band that helped launch a career built on collaborations with some of jazz’s greatest masters\, including Jimmy Heath\, Frank Wess\, Cedar Walton\, Ravi Coltrane\, Nancy Wilson\, and Bobby “Blue” Bland\, among many others. He has also performed with the Roy Hargrove Big Band\, The Village Vanguard Orchestra\, and the Duke Ellington Big Band\, and is currently a member of the Cannonball Adderley Legacy Band featuring Louis Hayes. \nAs a leader\, Pelt has recorded more than ten albums and toured globally with his various ensembles\, earning him five consecutive Rising Star honors on trumpet from DownBeat Magazine and the Jazz Journalists Association. He has been featured in the Wall Street Journal by legendary jazz writer and producer Nat Hentoff\, and JazzTimes has praised him as “a technical marvel” who “executes intricate solos with ease\, plays gorgeous ballads in a tasteful manner\, and never lacks flair or sensitivity.” This is a rare opportunity to experience one of jazz’s most respected trumpeters in an intimate setting. \nThe Side Door Jazz Club is a dedicated jazz listening room located inside the historic Old Lyme Inn\, 85 Lyme Street\, Old Lyme\, CT. McCoy Tyner himself\, when asked to describe Sharpe in two words\, chose “impeccable rhythm.” Beyond his work with Tyner\, Sharpe has performed and recorded with Dizzy Gillespie\, Art Blakey\, Archie Shepp\, and Pat Metheny\, among many others\, and has released more than a dozen albums as a leader on his own JKNM label\, along with commissioned works for symphony orchestras and chamber ensembles. \nJoining him is pianist Zaccai Curtis\, winner of the 2025 GRAMMY Award for Best Latin Jazz Album for his recording Cubop Lives!. Founded by drummer Hans Schuman\, the quintet has counted saxophonists Marcus Strickland\, Greg Ward\, and Wayne Escoffery\, pianist Glenn Zaleski\, and a long list of other first-call New York musicians among its ranks over the years\, each bringing their own voice to a group defined less by personnel than by a shared musical philosophy. \nThe group is equally comfortable in two very different modes. On one hand\, they’re dedicated to commissioning and performing brand new original works\, having released critically acclaimed recordings inspired by everything from the short stories of James Baldwin to the sounds of the New York City subway. On the other\, they’ve built celebrated multimedia “informance” programs paying tribute to giants like Miles Davis and John Coltrane\, blending live performance with narration and projected visuals to bring jazz history vividly to life.
