MONDAY NIGHT in NEW HAVEN (12/15/25) – The Saint James Trio @ Owl Shop – Doug Schlink, Mike Asetta, Lou Ianello & Kevin Saint James… 9PM. No cover. 21 and over. Owl Shop Cigar Lounge & Tobacconist. 268 College Street.
Hey all you groovy coo-coo people. Nobody knows about it yet, but we’ll be playin’ a special Saint James Trio session at Owl Shop this Monday nite from 9-12AM. We’ll be makin audio recordings of both sets that we hope to put to good use in the very near future. Instead of the usual full hootin’ and hollerin’ Wednesday nite band, we’ll be lettin’ our drummers stay home so we can capture the more laid back sound we get workin’ some of the more intimate dulcet Jazz standards in that quieter, maybekinda “tastier” format. Another reason we’re doin this here gig is so Lou and I can tape a nite with the uniquely unpredictable but always reliable combo of Doug Schlink and Mike Asetta on keys and bass. With these 2, just like the proverbial box of chocolates – you never quite know what you’re gonna get. They’re not usually in the regular rotation of players that work our smoky Wednesday nites, but we’ve been workin’ gigs with those 2 for quite a few years now and none of it’s ever been boring – in fact, we’re usually all laughin’ our asses off for whatever undisclosed reason. Big thanks go out to Glen Greenberg for lettin’ us get this thing going on in the first place.
How all of this’ll go over with the regular Monday Night Football crowd in there is uncertain, so we’re gonna need at least a few of you music lovers to show up or it’ll turn into one of those band practice-type gigs that used to happen all the time. Now that I think of it, they still happen every now and then, dependin’ on where we’re playin’, naturally enough. Hope we’ll see some of you regular Jazz aficionados over there this Monday nite – it should turn out to be worth the price of admission – which, incidentally, is zero dollars. I guess that aint exactly settin’ the bar too high, but I reckon we’ll do more than just live up to it. So, wadya say? A little melodious Monday night music might be just the thing, for a change. You never know. – K.
