The album would go on to produce several radio singles and song placements in Film and Television (Off Season TV, Amazon and Bear City 2 and 3, both of which Mike acted in).  The album also garnered a number of songwriting awards. In 2014, Mike won 2 OUTmusic Awards including the highly coveted Humanitarian Songwriter of the Year for his song “Be Strong (LGBT Youth)” and Best Spoken Word for “Tender.”  He received 5 nominations that year, the most of any artist, including Best Music Video for “Trying.” “Be Strong” was also selected as Boston Pride’s Flag-Raising Anthem.  Additionally, in 2014, the album’s jazz ballad “This Love” placed Top 10 in the U.S. Songwriting Competition and in 2017, the album title track “Mob Music” won the Lennon Award (Hip-Hop) in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest.

The Mob Music album was followed by Mike’s 2016 EP, Yasko Sensei, dedicated to his late mentor and musical-hero, Yasko Kubota. The EP landed at #11 on the iTunes Jazz Albums Charts and #2 on Billboard’s Most Added Chart for radio-single “Makes Me Wonder.” Mike continued his education at New York University in their Master of Music in Music Theory & Composition Master’s Program where he was made an Adjunct Professor of Composition upon entry. During his time at NYU, Mike toured the U.S. and U.K as Music Director for Lisa Bello, held a weekly live-music residency at ReBar Chelsea, and wrote the Mob Music 2 Album as the coursework and thesis for his Master’s Degree.  Mob Music 2 was released on October 18, 2019 and hit #39 on the iTunes R&B Albums Chart and was featured on Apple Music. Album opener, “Tip Jar” landed in the Semi-Finals of the 2020 International Songwriting Competition and was featured in the Television Show “30 The Series” (Amazon Prime) along with two other songs from the album.

In April of 2021, Mike and Lisa Bello released Wait Just Listen (The Live Album) and embarked on an eleven city album release tour, which included a sold-out main stage at City Winery Boston, accompanied by drummer extraordinaire Charles Haynes. Throughout his career, Mike has performed Ruth Pointer (Pointer Sisters), Cassandra Wilson, Matt Alber, Ada Vox, Varla Jean Merman, Esera Tuaolo, and many more. He has also recorded piano for Kat Deluna and LeAndria Johnson. Ronnie Burrage

Drummer, percussionist, keyboardist, composer, arranger, band leader and music educator Ronnie Burrage was born on October 19, 1959 in St. Louis, Missouri. His style draws most notably from the musical genres of “jazz”, “funk” and “soul”. Burrage sang in The St. Louis Cathedral Boys Choir from ages seven to eleven, and had the opportunity to perform with Duke Ellington, one of the greatest musical figures to ever live, at the incredibly young age of only nine years. He was introduced to “jazz” by listening to music every day, which was typically presented to him by his mother, his uncles and grandparents. He played drums, percussion, piano and vibraphone, and sang in “funk”, “R&B”, and “jazz” groups, including “The Soul Flamingos”, “Fontella Bass”, “The Oliver Sain Band”, “Third Circuit & Spirit”,” Rainbow Glass” and “Expression Jazz Quintet”. From the ages 15 to 17, Ronnie was a member of “No Commercial Potential” with keyboardist Mark Friedrick, bassist Darryl Mixon and guitarist Richie Daniels. They served as the opening act for pianist/keyboardist George Duke and Canadian “pop” singer/songwriter Gino Vannelli. Burrage played in clubs, concert halls, festivals and other assorted venues, including the annual “Afro Day in the Park” in St. Louis, Missouri. As a member of The St. Louis Metropolitan Jazz Quintet in the early 1980’s.

Ronnie Burrage’s current band “Holographic Principle” is featured on his upcoming Truth Revolution Recording Collective/Truth Revolution Records in collaboration with his own label, MiMikAlana Records debut release, entitled “Dance of the Great Spirit”. The band includes Polish pianist Michal Wierba and bassist Nimrod Speaks, alongside Ronnie himself on an assortment of instruments, which of course include the drum kit. According to Burrage, “The purposes of ‘Dance of the Great Spirit’ is to bring ‘Holographic Principle’ to the world, to provide work for each member of the trio, so that they might provide for their families and most importantly fund the nonprofit organization, ‘World Rhythm Academy’ www.worldrhythmacademy.org.

Marianne Solivan

With years of steady gigging (5 or 6 a week) in Boston during her school days at Berklee College of Music and The New England Conservatory, Solivan has had a unique opportunity to learn on the bandstand.  These early years allowed her to hone her skills as a strong band leader and amass a huge, broad repertoire that can challenge any song hound.  Her dedication to learning this music led her to study with a varied group of musician/educators that taught the tradition as well as modern approaches to the music.  These tools have shaped a vocalist with deep roots in the vocal tradition yet without any of the “retro” feel.  Solivan’s singing is a mixture of honest storytelling with a modern sense of self and determination.

In 2007 Solivan made the move to New York and began to sit in at many of the jam sessions the city has to offer.  Smoke Supper Club was her first consistent “hang” and a venue that led to many of her later musical collaborations with Jeremy Pelt, Ugonna Okegwo, and others.  Being a part of the scene has been a big part of the learning process and has been the catalyst for musical collaborations with Peter Bernstein, Steve Wilson and Lewis Nash.  This visibility and consistency on the bandstand opened doors for gigs at the famed Smalls Jazz Club, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, Birdland, The Blue Note, and many others.  And have led her to become one of the first call singers on the scene.

In 2012 Solivan brought together her years of experience and musical collaborations to the studio and recorded a series of duos, trios, and quartet pieces that became her first CD, Prisoner of Love, on HiPNOTIC Records.  Solivan recalls “I chose to work with a number of musicians on the project to showcase the musical environments that I have been working in for the last 4 years in New York, mainly small group settings. Together we told stories of love; lost, stolen, broken, desperate, and lonely.”

The OTTOWA CITIZEN gets right to the heart of the beauty of the disc “On Prisoner of Love, vocalist Marianne Solivan surrounds herself with some A-list, hard-swinging company [and] sounds every bit in the same league as these seasoned accompanists.  Solivan’s expression of classic jazz feeling and values is so room-filling and personal, you really can’t fault her disc one bit.”

In 2014 she went into the studio with the her working band, including pianist Xavier Davis, bassist Matthew Parrish and drummer Gregory Hutchinson and recorded SPARK which is an energized, swinging, honest and straight forward in it’s storytelling and sure to help her reach a wider jazz audience.

In 2015 after years of duo, trio and quartet work she has now jumped into the big band arena.  This is exciting news not only because this powerhouse singer has shown to hold her own with heavies the likes of Peter Bernstein, Jeremy Pelt and Christian McBride but also because there is currently no other female vocalist led big band. Solivan’s idea was to create a band that incorporated many of the elements  in her quartet including high energy, swing and a unique repertoire.  In addition she wanted to work with some of the jazz communities best arrangers to work on expanding the her repertoire, which includes a number of her own originals as well as standards, with original arrangements of material that was created for this group. So far, the result has been a highly energized & swinging band that will take you from the traditional feel through to salsa and the modern jazz idiom. All anchored by Solivan’s strong surefooted voice and confident leadership.

Joe Chambers

Born and raised near Philadelphia to a musical family, Joe Chambers heard not only the rock and roll of Louis Jordan and Slim Gaillard, but the classical of Vivaldi, Wagner, Beethoven and Mahler. Drums came early. “I think an instrument picks you. I used to play on post and pans when I was little. I was setting them up like a kit at four years of age, so the instincts were there.”

More taken with Lester Young and Lionel Hampton than Little Richard, Chambers nonetheless soon joined a band playing all the R&B hits of the day. “We played ‘house rock,’ horn players walking the bar like Big Jay McNeely and Tiny Bradshaw. But then I started hearing esoteric jazz like Miles Davis, and that grabbed me. When I heard that at age 13, immediately I was hooked.”

Chambers’ parents also played a big role in his musical vision, and prompted him to learn more. “The level of music that they listened to compared to today was just incredible, in terms of popular culture. Bebop is the most revolutionary period in American music. I call it the era when drummers freed themselves, from Jo Jones to Kenny Clarke to Max Roach.

Preachers used to preach against jazz. Then the people stopped dancing, killing the big bands. Bebop moved jazz from folkoric to a more cult-oriented and intellectual sound. That’s why R&B came in. There was a need for more proletarian music. Bebop became cult music. It was a revolutionary time. I witnessed all of that.”

Earning his undergrad degree in music from the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music, by age twenty-two Chambers had cut his first session with Freddie Hubbard’s Breaking Point album. The snowball began , from the aforementioned recording sessions to road work with Harold Land, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Eric Dolphy, and Dizzy Gillespie.

A member of the ’60s fraternity that recorded some of Blue Note’s greatest music, Joe Chambers can lay claim to a place alongside such innovative artists as Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner and Bobby Hutcherson. Chambers’ intense drumming, a trademark blend of cymbal- driven forward motion, deep rhythmic continuity, and explosive creativity, graced many landmark albums which fostered one of the most fertile eras in recent jazz memory. Chambers’ credits include Hubbard’s Breaking Point, Hutcherson’s Components, Shorter’s Schizophrenia and Etcetra, Hill’s Compulsion, and Tyner’s Tender Moments, as well as Archie Shepp’s New Thing at Newport, Charles Mingus’ Like a Bird, and Chick Corea’s Tones for Joan’s Bones and many others.
